This shrine stands as a tribute to Mary, built by Trinidad’s Catholic community, and serves as a haven for prayer, pilgrimage, and reflection.
Its origin story dates back to 1908, when Dr. John Espy, a physician at Mt. San Rafael Hospital, was traveling home after a night shift. Amidst a snowstorm, he noticed a glimmer of light flickering on the hill behind the hospital. Curiosity led him up the hill to find a large statue of Our Lady of Grace and a small candle flickering at its base – an inexplicable sight.
Many Trinidad residents saw this discovery as a divine sign. About 25 years later, local Catholics came together to build a chapel and grotto. Masses are occasionally held in the shrine. Call to visit.
