Bring your binoculars and a sharp eye to spot broad-tailed hummingbirds, red-tailed hawks, great-horned owls, and other birds in Trinidad’s mountains and plains. Fishers Peak also serves as a nesting ground for peregrine falcons.
The mix of piñon-juniper-filled woodlands, the banks of the Purgatoire River, and a wetland, creates a prime corridor for elk, mule deer, black bears, and the endangered New Mexico meadow jumping mouse, among many diverse species.
Colorado Birding Trail
Look to the Spanish Peaks and follow the Scenic Highway of Legends National Byway to see a gamut of Colorado habitats.
Spot highlights like dusky grouse and gray jay in the mountains and roadrunners and raptors in the canyons. In the high plains, see pronghorns and jackrabbits.
