The “Bear Forest” is the largest designated hunting area in Colorado and an outstanding destination for outdoor enthusiasts. Delight in breathtaking views of the Sangre de Cristo Mountain while hunting for bear, deer, elk, mountain lion, small game, and turkey.

Anglers can catch native coldwater stream trout species in the area’s streams.

Thanks to its remoteness, Bosque del Oro State Wildlife Area is also a vibrant woodland for birders, with sightings of woodpeckers, pigeons, and raptors like owls and eagles.

Tent and RV camping is available on a first-come, first-serve basis.

Note that the roads within Bosque de Oro SWA are made of gravel and dirt, which can be rough in areas after rain or snow. High-clearance vehicles are recommended.
